Bishop T.D. Jakes’ Life of CONTROVERSY.
TD Jakes: The Rise, the Power, and the Controversies That Followed Him.
Thomas Dexter Jakes, better known as T.D. Jakes, has built one of the most influential ministries in modern American Christianity.
He began with a small congregation of just ten people and eventually became the leader of The Potter’s House, a megachurch with more than 30,000 members.
He is widely respected as a gifted speaker, author, and business-minded church leader. In 2001, *Time* magazine even put him on its cover with the question, “Is this man the next Billy Graham?”
Over the years, Jakes has gathered celebrity admirers, including former NFL and football star Deion Sanders, who once said Jakes had such a strong influence on him that he affectionately called him “Daddy.”
But while Jakes has enjoyed extraordinary success, his career has also been marked by criticism, debate, and scandal. As his ministry expanded, so did the scrutiny around his finances, theology, family life, and public associations.

To supporters, he is a visionary who built a global ministry from humble beginnings. To critics, he is a symbol of the modern megachurch era, where influence, wealth, and image often collide.
Jakes’s rise began in very modest circumstances. He was born in South Charleston, West Virginia, and later built his early ministry in Texas.
He did not start with major money or a big church family name. Instead, he grew his following slowly through preaching, counseling, books, and media.
His teachings eventually became tied to the prosperity gospel, a belief system that teaches God rewards faithful believers with health and material blessing. Supporters say this reflects biblical truth and hope. Critics say it turns faith into a formula for personal wealth.
By the 1990s, Jakes’s church and his brand were gaining serious momentum. His books, music, speaking engagements, and ministry products generated significant income.
Public tax records once showed that he and his wife, Serita, earned $1.6 million in 1996. Later, Jakes told *The Washington Post* that he preferred to keep his income private. That secrecy only increased public curiosity about how much money he and his ministry were making.
Jakes also became known for living large. At one point, his family lived in a massive estate near White Rock Lake in Dallas.
The home was so public that the family even held Easter sunrise services on the lawn. Later, Jakes moved to a 15,000-square-foot mansion in Fort Worth.
In 2009, the home drew even more attention when authorities investigated an early morning explosion in the sunroom. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the incident only added to the public fascination with the bishop’s lifestyle.

Critics often point to Jakes’s luxury purchases as evidence that his preaching and his personal life are out of step with ordinary church members.
Social media accounts like *Preachers and Sneakers* have highlighted his expensive wardrobe and accessories, including designer sneakers and a Louis Vuitton bag worth nearly $22,000.
Jakes has defended his lifestyle by saying that his ministry is largely supported by book sales and products and that his church’s income does not come from exploiting poor people.
He has also said that tithes and offerings helped pay off the church’s $45 million mortgage. Still, watchdog groups have continued to call for greater financial transparency.
Some of the most painful controversies in Jakes’s life have involved his own children. His daughter Sarah became pregnant at the age of 13, a revelation Jakes discussed in his book *Crushing: God Turns Pressure Into Power*.
He described it as one of the worst moments of his life, especially because he was a public pastor under constant scrutiny. Sarah later married twice and has three children by three different men.
Jakes’s son Jermaine brought another wave of public attention in 2009 when he was arrested during a Dallas sting operation in a park.

According to police reports, he approached an undercover officer in a sexually suggestive way, and the arrest fueled speculation about his sexuality.
Jakes responded by saying that everyone has the right to pursue their own life and beliefs. But that answer did little to stop the public conversation.
Some critics pointed to biblical passages about a man ruling his own house before leading the church, suggesting that the bishop’s family issues reflected deeper leadership questions.
Questions about sexuality and doctrine were not limited to his son. Jakes himself has been scrutinized for his public stance on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.
He has repeatedly said that his scriptural beliefs do not allow him to endorse same-sex marriage. In a 2015 interview, however, some of his remarks about evolving ministry work were interpreted by many as a softening of his position.
LGBTQ advocates praised what they thought was a new openness, but Jakes quickly clarified on Facebook that he had not changed his view and that his position remained rooted in Scripture.
The backlash was intense, with some accusing him of double talk and others defending him for being misquoted.
The bishop has also faced theological criticism for beliefs some classify as modalism or Oneness Pentecostalism. In simple terms, critics argue that this view denies the traditional doctrine of the Trinity.

Jakes’s own school statement refers to God existing in three “manifestations,” which has only increased debate about exactly how he interprets the nature of God.
For some Christians, this is a serious theological problem. For others, it is a nuanced distinction that outsiders overstate. Either way, it has followed him for years.
In 2022, Jakes sparked more controversy on Father’s Day when he preached a sermon that many listeners felt was too harsh toward women.
He argued that modern culture celebrates women for being overly independent, aggressive, and tough, while men are left behind. He also suggested that society is encouraging women to behave more like men and that this is harming family structure.
The message spread quickly online and drew strong reactions. Critics said he missed an opportunity to honor fathers and instead used the platform to criticize black women.
Supporters argued that he was addressing broader social change. The sermon only added to the sense that Jakes often walks a fine line between bold preaching and provocative commentary.
Despite the criticism, his influence remains enormous. In 2023, Jakes announced a major development project aimed at creating mixed-income housing and retail space near Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
The project was intended to help create more black homeowners and expand community investment. But the plan immediately drew questions when it was revealed that Wells Fargo would help fund the project with up to $1 billion.
Given the bank’s own history of discrimination lawsuits and allegations of racist lending practices, many wondered whether Jakes was being used to help clean up the bank’s image.
He also made headlines for his friendship with Sean “Diddy” Combs. Jakes publicly said he had known Diddy for years and that their relationship deepened after spending time together.
Diddy later said Jakes’s sermons helped him through dark periods in his life and even launched a show on Revolt with the bishop. But the partnership confused many observers, especially given Diddy’s public lifestyle and the biblical warnings about unequally yoked relationships.
Critics argued that the association raised serious questions about judgment and spiritual alignment.
Through it all, Jakes has remained one of the most recognizable preachers in America. He is a powerful speaker, a successful author, a media figure, and a man whose influence reaches far beyond the church. But his legacy is complicated. For every person inspired by his ministry, there is someone else questioning his theology, his wealth, or his choices.
That tension is what keeps T.D. Jakes at the center of conversation. He is not just a preacher. He is a cultural force, and with that comes constant scrutiny.
